Uttrakhand: Uttarakhand
(Uttaranchal) is known for its hills and foothills stations. The State is well
connected through rail and road connections. The state capital is Dehradun.
From Delhi there are many road/ rail options to reach Dehradun which is located
at a distance of around 245 Kms from Delhi by road and 315 kms by rail. On the
way is located Haridwar which is famous for its location on Ganges Bank and a
highly religious place for Hindus. The road
distance upto Haridwar is 220 kms and rail distance is 263 kms.
The other nearby hills station Rishikesh is famous for its beautiful hills and gradually getting more famous for Yoga, Leisure and Rafting etc. If someone wants to travel to Rishikesh than it is better to travel to Haridwar and from there the town is located at around 24 kms upstream Ganges. Normally taxis are frequently available from Haridwar for Rishikesh.
TOURIST PLACES IN HARIDWAR
Haridwar is the gateway to the pilgrimages and
tourism to Uttrakhand (Uttaranchal). It’s also the starting point of the
journey to the sacred sources of the rivers Gangotri and the Yamunotri.
According to legend, Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to salvage the
souls of his ancestors who had perished due to sage Kapil’s curse. The penance
was answered and the river Ganga trickled forth from Lord Shiva's locks and its
bountiful water revived the sons of King Sagara. In the tradition of Bhagirath,
devout Hindus stand in the sacred waters here, praying for salvation of their
ancestors.
Haridwar literal meaning is 'the Gateway to the
Gods' is one of the seven holiest places according to Hindu mythology, as the
Gods are believed to have left their footprints in Haridwar. It is believed to
be as old as the Varanasi city of India. In the rotation, Haridwar holds the mammoth
Kumbah Mela every 6th and 12th Year on the famous Hari Ki Pauri. Due to its
geographical location too, Haridwar stands as the gateway to the other three
important pilgrimages of Uttrakhand namely, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath.
Haridwar has always remained a major pilgrimage for the Hindus.
Har
Ki Pauri:
Har-Ki-Pauri, the sacred ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya in the
memory of his brother Bhartrihari. The golden reflection of floral diyas in the
river Ganges is the most enchanting sight in the twilight during the Ganga
aarti ceremony at the ghat. The ghat is also famous for some sacred places like
Brahm Kund etc.
Mansa
Devi: The
Mansa Devi Temple is situated on top of the Bilwa Parvat in Haridwar in the
state of Uttaranchal. The Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar is dedicated to the
Goddess Mansa Devi. In this temple there is one particular statue of the
Goddess, which has five arms and three faces. The other statue of the Goddess
has eight arms. From the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar, a beautiful view of the
town can be had. In Haridwar, there is a Ropeway service kept on the name of Goddess
Mansa Devi, known as Devi Udankhatola. From the lower station the ropeway
carries the visitors right up to the Mansa Devi Temple. The full length of the
ropeway is 540 meters and the height it covers is, 178 meters.
Chandi
Temple:
The temple of Chandi Devi a top the Neel Parvat on the other bank of
river Ganges was constructed in AD 1929 by Suchat Singh, the then King of
Kashmir. The temple is a 3-km trek from Chandi Ghat and it is believed that the
Adi Shankaracharya established the main statue in eighth century AD. The Chandi
Devi Temple is now also accessible by a ropeway, which starts near the Gauri
Shankar Temple.
Other important places to visit are the Gurukul Kangri University, Bharat Mata Temple, Maya Devi Temple, Bhimgoda, and Shanti Kunj.
TOURIST
PLACES IN DEHRADUN
There are a good number of attractive tourist
places in Dehradun. Dehradun is famous from old times for its beautiful
climatic condition through out of year and attracts visitors from all over the
world. Dehradun, located in close vicinity to the lovely hill station of
Mussoorie, is visited by a large number of tourists every year. The city's
interesting places around and the beautiful rest houses and good hotels make
Dehradun very popular among tourists.

in Dehradun.
Sahastra
Dhara: The
literal meaning of this name of wonderful waterfall is thousands fold stream. One
of the well known tourist spots in Dehradun, located about 11 kilometers from
the city. This tourist spot is ideal for picnic and the nearby Baldi river and
the caves are the major tourist attractions. The place has a sulphur spring
where the visitors take bath for its curative and other medicinal properties.
Tapkeshwar
Temple:
About 5.5 km from the city bus stand you will find one of the most ancient
places of worship in in Dehradun. This temple is situated on the bank of a
small stream. The name of the temple is given because of droplets of water that
fall on the rock. On the occasion of Shivratri, thousands assemble to pray to
the God. This beautiful temple is a must see tourist place in Dehradun.
Rajaji
National Park:
This forest range is one of the finest ecological reserve in the valley of the
Shivalik Mountain Ranges. It has quite a variety of flora and fauna. There is
not only dense forest cover but also fine grass lands and this supports a large
number of mammals of different species. The best season to go for a tour of the
park is between November to the middle of June. A safari through the park is
going to be an experience for you.
Water
Sport Resort:
The Dehradun valley is famous for water sport and if you really want a taste of
it, head straight for the Asan Barrage. Situated along the Chandigarh-Shimla
highway, this popular water sport resort is only 43 km away from the city of
Dehradun. There are a number of water sports like water skiing, kayaking,
boating, canoeing, rowing, etc. that you can enjoy here. During winter it
becomes a favorite destination for bird watchers as the reservoir in the
vicinity attracts a lot of migratory birds.
Train Travel to Haridwar and Dehradun
Delhi – Haridwar – Dehradun –Haridwar – Delhi Shatabdi Express is the fastest train available in this route and traveling from Delhi to Haridear or Dehradun by train is a quick and convenient option. The Shatabdi Express completes the journey in around four hours till Haridwar and Six Hours till Dehradun. Shatabdi Express Trains are fastest trains available and mostly day-trains as it returns to the originating stations on same day. All the Shatabdi Express trains have one coach of first class air-conditioned seating. These coaches have wider leg room and offer better food compared to the normal Air conditioned seating (CC). New on-board entertainment systems have also been installed on some of these trains where the passengers can view movies and television serials directly via satellite. The main railway station in Delhi is New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), near Paharganj.
The other fastest train available on this route is Jan Shatabdi Express. These kind of trains are put into operation with a view of providing economical option to the Shatabdi Express Trains. The train takes almost same time to travel to Haridwar or Dehradun as Shatabdi Express. However the difference is the train have only normal air conditioned seating (CC) and normal second class seating (2S) without AC. The meal is also not included in the fare.
12017 Delhi to Dehradun Shatabdi Exprss: The fastest and most convenient train from Delhi to Haridwar or Dehradun is the premium 12017 Dehradun Shatabdi. It departs New Delhi Railway Station at 6.50 and arrives at Haridwar at 11.25 and Dehradun at 12:40 on the same day. The fare in 1AC (first class, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 825 upto Haridwar and rupees 900 upto Dehradun. CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 435 upto Haridwar and rupees 470 upto Dehradun. The train runs every day and meals are included. The train halts in Ghaziabad, Meerut City, Muzaffarnagar, Shaharanpur, Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12018 Dehradun to Delhi Shatabdi Express: On the return journey, it departs Dehradun Station at 17:00 and arrives at Haridwar at 18:13 and Delhi at 22:45 on the same day. The fare in 1AC (first class, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 1005 from Dehradun and rupees 935 from Haridwar. CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 545 from Dehradun and rupees 505 from Haridwar. The train runs every day and meals are included. The train halts in Ghaziabad, Meerut City, Muzaffarnagar, Shaharanpur, Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12055 Delhi to Dehradun Jan Shatabdi: The train take almost the same time as of Shatabdi Express to reach Haridwar or Dehradun. However the train is more convenient to to passengers who are leaving Delhi with mindset of making night halt in Haridwar or Dehradun before start of their Next day program. It departs New Delhi Railway Station at 15:15 and arrives at Haridwar at 19:30 and Dehradun at 21:10 on the same day. The fare in CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is 345 rupees upto Haridwar and rupees 380 upto Dehradun. 2S (chair car, seated, non air conditioned) is rupees 107 upto Haridwar and rupees 117 upto Dehradun. The train halts in Ghaziabad, Meerut City, Muzaffarnagar, Deobad, Tapri, Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12056 Dehradun to Delhi Jan Shatabdi: This economical and fast train is good choice for morning starters. On the return journey, it departs Dehradun Station at 05:10 and arrives at Haridwar at 06:22 and Delhi at 11:15 on the same day. The fare in CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 380 from Dehradun and rupees 345 from Haridwar. 2S (chair car, seated, non air conditioned) is rupees 117 from Dehradun and rupees 107 from Haridwar. The train halts in Ghaziabad, Meerut City, Muzaffarnagar, Deobad, Tapri, Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
