Uttrakhand: Uttarakhand
(Uttaranchal) is known for its hills and foothills stations. The State is well
connected through rail and road connections. The state capital is Dehradun.
From Delhi there are many road/ rail options to reach Dehradun which is located
at a distance of around 245 Kms from Delhi by road and 315 kms by rail. On the
way is located Haridwar which is famous for its location on Ganges Bank and a
highly religious place for Hindus. The road
distance upto Haridwar is 220 kms and rail distance is 263 kms.
The other nearby hills station Rishikesh is
famous for its beautiful hills and gradually getting more famous for Yoga,
Leisure and Rafting etc. If someone
wants to travel to Rishikesh than it is better to travel to Haridwar by rail or
road and from there the town is located at around 24 kms upstream Ganges. Normally
taxis are frequently available from Haridwar for Rishikesh.

PLACES IN RISHKESH
Rishikesh a small town situated 24 kms upstream
from Haridwar, at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga rivers. Rishikesh,
also known as the “place of sagas” is a Hindu’s religious place. It is
believed that God by the name of “Hrishikesh” had appeared as an answer to the
hard penances by Rabhiya Rishi and henceforth the place derived its name.
It is the starting point for the Char Dham
pilgrimage and an ideal destination not only for pilgrims but also for the
people who are interested in medtation, yoga and other aspects of Hinduism. For
the adventure seekers, Rishikesh is the suggested place for starting their
trekking expeditions to the Himalayan peaks and for rafting. Also,
International Yoga week which attracts participation from across the world, is
held here, every year, in February on the banks of the Ganga.
Bharat Mandir: The Bharat Mandir is a holy Hindu temple in Rishikesh. The temple was established by Adiguru Shankaracharya near in the 8th century AD. The main deity installed here is of Lord Vishnu, the idol is being carved out from a single piece of Saligram.
A spectacular sacred Shree Yanthra is placed at
the inner canopy of the temple. The details of this ancient temple are recorded
in the very old record of Kearkhand (Vide Chapter 115 to 120). Present temple
is the renovated one reconstructed on the ruins of the original temple
destroyed by Tamur Lane. Recent excavations brought out many old statues,
ancient pots and coins and other artifacts of historical importance from this
site.
It is in the center of the old town on the Banks of the River Ganges. According to the ancient records, it is one of the oldest temples of Rishikesh and is among the most important places to visit in Rishikesh. In the inner sanctum, you will find an idol of lord Vishnu. Several old statues, coins, pots and other artifacts of historical importance have been found during recent excavations within the premises.
Some premier temples in Rishikesh are Raghunath
Temple, Pushkar Temple, Venkateshwar Temple, Chandra Mauleshwaran Temple, Shatrughan
Temple and Lakshman Temple.
Triveni
Ghat: It
is a sacred spot where the pilgrims swarm to for a holy dip. A large number of pilgrims throng in to this
place every evening to attend the Ganga Arti that takes place at this Ghat.
Lakshman
Jhula: It
is one of the most prominent landmarks at Rishikesh. This is a suspended bridge
and was built in the year 1929. According to the beliefs, the river at this
place is said to have been crossed by Rama’s brother Lakshman using a jute
rope. To savor the panoramic views of the surroundings and the cool breeze,
this bridge is an ideal spot.
Delhi – Dehradun – Delhi Shatabdi Express is the fastest
train available in this route and traveling from Delhi to Haridear by train is a quick and
convenient option. The Shatabdi Express completes the journey in around four
hours till Haridwar. Shatabdi Express Trains are fastest trains available and
mostly day-trains as it returns to the originating stations on same day. All
the Shatabdi Express trains have one coach of first class air-conditioned
seating. These coaches have wider leg room and offer better food compared to
the normal Air conditioned seating (CC). New on-board entertainment systems
have also been installed on some of these trains where the passengers can view
movies and television serials directly via satellite. The main railway station
in Delhi is New
Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), near Paharganj.
Train Travel to Haridwar
The other fastest train available on this route is
Jan Shatabdi Express. These kind of trains are put into operation with a view
of providing economical option to the Shatabdi Express Trains. The train takes
almost same time to travel to Haridwar as Shatabdi Express. However the
difference is the train have only normal air conditioned seating (CC) and
normal second class seating (2S) without AC. The meal is also not included in
the fare.
12017 Delhi
to Dehradun Shatabdi Exprss: The
fastest and most convenient train from Delhi
to Haridwar is the premium 12017 Dehradun Shatabdi. It departs New Delhi
Railway Station at 6.50 and arrives at Haridwar at 11.25 on the same day. The
fare in 1AC (first class, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 825 upto Haridwar.
CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 435 upto Haridwar. The train
runs every day and meals are included. The train halts in Ghaziabad ,
Meerut City , Muzaffarnagar, Shaharanpur,
Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12018 Dehradun to Delhi
Shatabdi Express: On the return
journey, it departs Haridwar station at 18:13 and arrives Delhi at 22:45 on the same day. The fare in
1AC (first class, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 935 from Haridwar. CC
(chair car, seated, air conditioned) is rupees 505 from Haridwar. The train
runs every day and meals are included. The train halts in Ghaziabad ,
Meerut City , Muzaffarnagar, Shaharanpur,
Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12055 Delhi to Dehradun Jan Shatabdi: The train take almost the same time as of
Shatabdi Express to reach Haridwar or Dehradun. However the train is more
convenient to passengers who are leaving Delhi
with mindset of making night halt in Haridwar before start of their Next day
program. It departs New Delhi Railway Station at 15:15 and arrives at Haridwar
at 19:30 on the same day. The fare in CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned)
is 345 rupees upto Haridwar. 2S (chair car, seated, non air conditioned) is
rupees 107 upto Haridwar. The train halts in Ghaziabad ,
Meerut City , Muzaffarnagar, Deobad, Tapri,
Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
12056 Dehradun to Delhi Jan Shatabdi: This economical and fast train is good choice for
morning starters. On the return journey, it departs Haridwar station at 06:22
and arrives at Delhi
at 11:15 on the same day. The fare in CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned)
is rupees 345 from Haridwar. 2S (chair car, seated, non air conditioned) is
rupees 117 from Haridwar. The train halts in Ghaziabad ,
Meerut City , Muzaffarnagar, Deobad, Tapri,
Roorkee, Haridwar JN, Dehradun on its course of journey from both directions.
